The Tailwagger Club adheres strictly to the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) principles of using only KIND, FAIR and EFFECTIVE training methods. Class sizes vary according to their nature and the venue but the ratio of dogs to trainer is rarely more than 6 to 1. Classes are held every week day evening across five locations in North Leeds, Harrogate and Otley and are organised in 6-week blocks. We hold the following regular classes:
P1. PUPPY 1: LIFE SKILLS
Aimed at very young pups and/or novice owners, this course covers issues related to coping with each other! Topics include house training, habituation, mouthing, jumping up, walking on lead.
P2. PUPPY 2: KENNEL CLUB GCDS FOUNDATION COURSE
Aimed at slightly older puppies, often following on from P1, this course includes all topics relevant to the Kennel Club scheme plus additional, progressive training. Topics include recall, loose lead walking, handling, stay.
A1. ADULT 1: BASIC MANNERS CLASS
This course is aimed at adolescents and adult dogs new to training. Topics include training techniques, resistance to handling, mouthing/biting, jumping up, lunging, running away, pulling on lead….but the actual content of each course is determined by the needs of the course members.
A2. ADULT 2: NOVICE CLASS
For dogs that can work in a group situation whose owners wish to take their training to the Kennel Club GCDS BRONZE level. Topics include walking without pulling, coming to call, stay, meet/greet. Dogs deemed ready may take the test on Week 6.
A3. ADULT 3: PROGRESS CLASS
This class covers both SILVER and GOLD levels of the KC GCDS scheme. Taking the tests is not mandatory and, as in all the classes, there are many exercises included which are unrelated to the GCDS but which are just good fun to train. Topics include off-lead heel, emergency stop, send to bed, catch, tricks, target training, heelwork to music, canine games.
A4. ADULT 4: ADVANCED CLASS
This is the Tailwagger ‘POST-GOLD’ scheme. There are three levels: ADVANCED, PREMIER and ELITE. This class is a mixture of obedience, tricks and canine games activities and can include distance control, scent discrimination, directional sendaways, kong retrieval and much more.
